Pole vaulter Mikko Paavola has announced that his competitive season is over due to an ankle injury.

According to the press release of the Finnish Sports Confederation, Paavola’s injury occurred at the end of June in the ranking competition organized for the Eugene World Championships in Oulu.

– The ankle cannot yet withstand the forces of the effort that will come in the pole vault at full speed, and we checked with the physiotherapist and the coach that this is the only right solution, Paavola said.

– With this solution, next year’s training season and training will certainly be safe. This is not a huge injury. Now we just make sure that the injury does not prolong unnecessarily or become chronic.

With the decision, Paavola, 24, will have to miss the European Championships in Munich.

– Missing the European Championships is sad, of course, but since the goal there was to do well in the finals, and not just participate in the games, it would not have been possible to achieve the goal with this ankle, Paavola stated.

In Eugene, Paavola jumped a result of 550 in the qualification, which was not relevant to the final competition.

Paavola is ranked 35th on this season’s European list with a score of 555.
