“Poison in every puff”: Canada puts warning on every single cigarette | Abroad

Canada has decided to place a health warning on every single cigarette. The intention is that the measure will be introduced gradually from 1 August.

The cigarettes will carry messages such as “poison in every puff”, “tobacco smoke harms children” and “cigarettes cause cancer”. Canada is the first country in the world to introduce this measure.

The health warnings on the packages will also remain. “With this courageous measure, smokers will continue to face the consequences of their actions,” said Canada’s Minister of Health and Addictions.

5 percent smokers in 2035

Carolyn Bennett points out that some young people have started smoking after receiving one cigarette from someone. In this way, they initially did not come into contact with the health warnings on the packages.

In 2000, Canada was also the first country in the world to require pictures and texts on packages to create awareness about the dangers of smoking. The government aims to reduce the number of smokers in the country to 5 percent by 2035, which equates to about 2 million people. Currently, 13 percent of the Canadian population still smokes.
