Pierre van Hooijdonk doesn’t understand Ajax to get rid of Sébastien Haller: ‘Remarkable’ | Dutch football

Pierre van Hooijdonk has little understanding for Ajax’s choice of Sébastien Haller after a year and a half to get rid of to Borussia Dortmund. Haller is ‘definitely successful’ as a striker in Amsterdam, according to the analyst and former Orange striker.

,,The process of Haller’s departure has actually already been set in motion because Brian Brobbey, who absolutely has music, let it seep through early on that he wanted to stay with Ajax. That turned out to be mutual. That’s why I’m no longer surprised. Still, I find it surprising and remarkable that Ajax is already letting him go,” said Van Hooijdonk.

,,Apart from wondering who makes such a decision now that director Overmars and coach Ten Hag have left, I think his goals will be missed. It’s hard to get it back. Of course you get a lot of opportunities as an Ajax striker, but putting away such figures in the CL makes you a good striker for me.”

If Sébastien Haller passes the medical examination at Borussia Dortmund today, the love-hate relationship between Ajax’s supporters and the record striker will definitely come to an end. Why he will be sorely missed in the capital.

,,Ajax could have chosen to keep him. It is also not an amount that could not be refused. Don’t you say as a club that you see him as a bad buy? Why else are you selling it with numbers like that? For me, he certainly succeeded. That is possible with three nines, but then there are always people who think that it should be three tens. In any case, these were not three sixes.”

Van Hooijdonk is disturbed by the way in which football is viewed in the Netherlands. ,,If a pupil outplays three men, he is immediately good. We send a defender who is less on the ball abroad. You need specific qualities in each position. A striker does not have to pass four men. Tadic no longer does that. A striker has to score goals. Haller did. Without him I don’t see any attacking headers anymore. In my opinion you should always have one of those. But then you quickly don’t fit into the Ajax profile.”
