More than 450 units of rally cars are not sold by chance: Skoda knows it well, which with the Fabia R5 and Rally2 Evo has been able to build, from 2015 to today, what we could define as a quasi-monopoly of the car market. cars of category R5. Twelve world titles – drivers and manufacturers – and over 1,700 victories around the world have enabled the Czech manufacturer to lay the foundations for an even more advanced project, Skoda Fabia RS Rally2. The latest evolution of a winning machine since its birth, easy to drive – if compared to its direct rivals -, to configure and with an enviable reliability for a vehicle capable of tackling the most treacherous asphalts and dirt roads on the planet, is based on the fourth generation of Skoda Fabia, introducing several innovations compared to the previous racing model. After a full year of testing in all terrain (asphalt, snow, dirt) and atmospheric conditions (hot, cold, rain), with tests in different areas of the world (Czech Republic, France, Italy, Croatia, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Finland), the Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 finally takes off the veils. Official FIA homologation is expected to arrive in August and the race debut is scheduled for the end of the summer.

Skoda Fabia RS Rally2: engine

Skoda Motorsport has developed a new engine for the Fabia RS Rally2: the starting point is the 2.0 Tsi used on the RS road models of the Octavia Wagon, but obviously brought to 1.6 liters – again turbo – by technical regulation. The car guarantees 291 Hp of maximum power and 430 Nm of torque, with the traction that remains integral and the gearbox the “usual” five-speed sequential gear ratio such as to reach about 200 km / h, speed well more than enough for a rally car. The clutch is used only when starting off at park service, when maneuvering or when traveling extremely slowly. In particular, of the 4-cylinder with exhaust manifold derived from the series, pistons, combustion chambers and lubrication system have been revised. The turbo is new, with the flange remaining with a diameter of 32 mm as per FIA regulation.

Skoda Fabia RS Rally2: brakes and safety

To curb all the exuberance of the best that can be found today in the Rally2 category there is a specially designed braking system: the discs have a size of 355 mm at the front and 300 mm at the rear for races on asphalt and 300 mm both at the front and at the rear for races on dirt and snow, boasting internal ventilation since during the special stages the temperatures of the braking system can reach 700 °. Improvements also from the point of view of safety for the crew, with a total of 35.8 meters of cremo-molybdenum rollbar to protect the driver and co-driver from any collisions, impacts and rollovers in the event of going off the road as well as racing seats with head protectors and composite panels for side impacts.

Skoda Fabia RS Rally2: aerodynamics and technology

More voluminous bodywork and longer wheelbase: at first glance the Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 is significantly longer and more muscular than the previous race car, while promising even greater control of the rear. Compared to the previous model, the downforce is almost double, thanks to the recalculated air flows and also to the large rear wing. The excursion of the shock absorbers is increased compared to the Fabia Rally2 Evo, while the 82.5-liter tank (repositioned to make room for a larger intercooler) has been specifically designed to prevent fuel spillage and to accommodate bio fuels, as per Fia 2022 regulation. The main display, which can also show information via video, has been designed to be more intuitive and practical during a rally. The control panel is equipped with a touchscreen and the driver can interface with this device directly via some buttons on the steering wheel, where we find, among other things, the engine start button.
