Despite illness, Peter Wright fought his way into the round of 16 at the Darts World Cup. There is now a high-class duel.
The Darts World Cup in London will have its first major sporting highlight before the turn of the year. On Sunday (from 8:15 p.m./Sport1 and DAZN) title holder Luke Humphries from England and two-time world champion Peter Wright from Scotland will meet in the Ally Pally. “I’m just one world title away from matching his career. And I’m about 25 years younger,” Humphries said.
It’s no big surprise that the 29-year-old Englishman reached the round of 16. His victories over Thibaut Tricole (3:0) and Nick Kenny (4:0) were safe, Humphries is heading towards defending his title. “I can do so much more, but I haven’t shown it yet. I’m relieved to be further along,” said Humphries.
The fact that Wright reached the round of 16 is certainly a bit of a surprise. Especially since “Snakebite”, as the bird of paradise is called, went into the third round game against Jermaine Wattimena sick.
“The chest infection didn’t affect my darts. Hopefully I’ll feel a little better in my next game,” said Wright after the 4-2 win over Wattimena. On stage he even forewent his famous dance and greeted the referees with an elbow instead of the usual handshake. Wright has Saturday as a rest day before the test against the world champion.
