“People sleep outside here for fear of aftershocks”: images show enormous devastation in the old city center of Marrakesh | Powerful earthquake in Morocco

It is mainly in Medina, the old city center of Marrakech, where a lot of damage has been caused. Buildings have been completely destroyed, causing people and tourists who live or stay in that old part of the city to sleep on the streets out of fear.

“We saw that many people spent the night on the street,” says Julie Colpaert on site. “There is enormous fear of the risk of collapse, which causes people to avoid buildings.”

This fear is justified as aftershocks were still observed in the earthquake area this morning. According to the Moroccan Seismic Monitoring and Warning Service, they “pose no danger and most cases cannot be felt.”

According to the head of the service, it is a positive development, but he points out that previously damaged buildings can still collapse due to aftershocks.

Rescue workers continue to search with all their might for survivors of the earthquake under the rubble. In the meantime, more than 2,000 people have died and 2,059 others have been injured, of whom 1,404 are in serious condition, according to the ministry.
