STOCKHOLM (dpa-AFX) – Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, Germany has become the fourth largest arms exporter. This means that the Federal Republic of China has overtaken China, according to a report by the Stockholm peace research institute Sipri. Almost a quarter of German arms exports went to support Ukraine. According to the report, another 17 percent were exported to other European countries.

According to the peace researchers, global arms shipments increased by 9.2 percent between the periods 2016 to 2020 and 2021 to 2025. European countries tripled their arms imports during this period.

The biggest driver of this development continues to be the war in Ukraine. The Russian threat is also causing European countries to strengthen their own armament capabilities. Uncertainty about the extent to which the USA would defend its NATO partners in an emergency has also driven up demand for weapons among European NATO states, according to the report.

“Although European companies have ramped up their arms production and the EU’s new investment aid for the Defense industry of member states have led to a number of orders within the EU, European states continued to import US weapons in 2021-25, particularly fighter jets and long-range air defense systems,” said researcher Katarina Djokic.

In the period from 2021 to 2025, the USA accounted for 42 percent of all international arms deliveries and exported armaments to 99 countries. “For the first time in two decades, the largest share of US arms exports went to Europe and not the Middle East,” says the Sipri report./wbj/DP/zb
