It has long been known that Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan admire each other. Now the Beatles singer admits in an interview that he became a nervous fan when he was supposed to talk to Dylan.
First meeting in the hotel room
The two music icons have valued and admired each other for 60 years. Their first meeting took place in a hotel room in August 1964, where Dylan first introduced the Beatles to marijuana. Now Paul McCartney confessed his affection for Dylan’s music in an interview with BBC Radio 2: “Mr. Tambourine Man” ended up among his favorite songs, and about his relationship with Dylan he said: “I’m a fan, you know? I don’t know him well enough. I’m a little nervous to talk to him.” Even musical legends know how their hearts flutter when it comes to meeting their heroes.
Wow moment at the Coachella Festival
Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney last met at the Coachella Festival. McCartney remembers: “There were a lot of vintage acts: us, the Stones, Bob, Neil Young. And one of our girls said, ‘Bob Dylan wants to see you.'” The two then met alone backstage. “I just thought, ‘Wow.’ It was just him and me in this huge backstage tent.” Dylan is said to have complimented McCartney a lot: “It’s funny because it was almost embarrassing. He said, ‘You’re a star.’ I thought, what is the answer to that? ‘Thanks Bob, I love what you do.’”
Mutual admiration between two legends
McCartney recently attended a Bob Dylan show. Even if he said that his own concerts would be very different from those of the folk musician, he would understand the peculiarities of his fellow musician. Many of the most personal Beatles songs were also influenced by Dylan. In addition, McCartney sometimes likes to be a little more like Bob Dylan and cares less about what other people think of him. He, in turn, speaks highly of McCartney. In a 2007 interview, he said: “I have so much admiration for McCartney. He’s one of the only people I’m in awe of. He can do anything. He does it so damn effortlessly.”
Two absolute stars with legendary status who adore each other for their music and personality – even Paul McCartney can get weak in the knees. He will certainly understand if his own fans get a little nervous in front of him.
