Quarterback Drake Maye is entering his third season with the New England Patriots. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has now spoken about the 23-year-old’s development. A teammate is also very optimistic.
Last season, the Pats surprisingly became the top team for many and even made it to the Super Bowl. There they ultimately had no chance against the Seattle Seahawks (13:29) – but internally the team’s potential is far from exhausted.
Especially not with Maye, who excelled in his second NFL season and almost won the MVP award. “Last offseason was about internalizing the terminology and moving within our offensive structure,” McDaniels explained. “This year we want to take the next step and reach an even higher level in terms of quarterback play.”
The prerequisites are there because: “He knows significantly more today than he did at the same time a year ago. Now it’s about perfecting things when there is the opportunity, or internalizing new aspects and developing further as a player and with the offense.”
The offensive coordinator praised May for having a “great attitude”: “It’s a lot of fun working with him every day. It was great last year too, but now everything is going even faster.”
Tight end Hunter Henry is also looking forward to the coming season: “The fact that he’s now entering his second year in this system shouldn’t be underestimated, because that demands a lot from the quarterback. Now he can build on last year, so I’m excited to see how big the progress he’ll make from day to day.”
In the 2025 regular season, Maye won 14 games with the Patriots, recording 4,394 passing yards with 31 touchdown passes and 8 interceptions. In the MVP vote he was narrowly defeated by Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams).
