Parcels lose themselves in dance trance with their new live album

Parcels have announced their new album “Live Vol.2” and a new musical path.

The Australian group’s first live LP was released in 2020 and you could hear them perform at full throttle in Berlin’s famous Hansa Studios. But now the conditions are changing, because the second live record brings Parcels to the dance floor.

The 12 tracks – including five new songs – were recorded live by the band at Le Palace, a well-known nightclub in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. This also includes “Reflex”, which can already be heard now.

“I think after the last album we wanted to let ourselves go a little bit and really dive into the world of dance music,” drummer Anatole ‘Toto’ Serret told the UK edition of Rolling Stone.

Serret continued: “We had just finished Day/Night, our second record, and I think we just wanted to celebrate because we had been touring a lot, but also because we have a thing for connecting songs with other songs . Of course the whole thing ended with the idea of recording it in a club.”

Actually, New York had only been decided as the production location, but the vibe in Paris spoke against it.
“We were there right after our European tour and we had everything we needed,” the drummer added.

Parcels from POV perspective

The new album is accompanied by a film directed by long-time collaborator Carmen Crummelin, which effortlessly captures the euphoria of the entire performance. To achieve this effect, Crummelin attached the cameras to the bodies of the band members and the audience.

“We really wanted to capture the feeling of being in a nightclub and getting lost in a musical trance, but that’s not always easy, so Carmen spread the cameras among some of her friends,” says Serret.

During the very long tour in 2022, the question arose as to how new songs could be made suitable for the stage and how old songs could be revisited. The day-and-night concept helped her to follow her own artistic path.

“We were constantly switching between the daytime record, which we played at the front of the stage, and the nighttime part, where we were all together at the back of the stage,” said the drummer. “That worked really well on the second part of the record because the idea of playing the night part in a club turned out to be groundbreaking because we could feel the energy that comes from all of us standing two meters apart while we perform . We played the Nightside songs for two hours, and I could have stuck with it for a lot longer. I just enjoyed it.”

Parcels’ Live: Vol 2 will be released on October 20th.
