A painting made of thousands of gummy bears? At candy manufacturer Tanis in Oosterhout they like a challenge and that is why they are going to try to break the world record for the largest gummy bear mosaic. “There are approximately 100,000 bears that we have to lay by hand,” director Wouter Tanis said on the radio program Afslag Zuid on Thursday.

It is not the first time that Tanis has attempted a world record. By 2023, the company will have created the world’s largest gummy bear. The orange candy was no less than two by two meters. This earned Tanis a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

Wouter Tanis hopes to establish a second one on April 14. “We thought: we’ll do it again, but differently. We’re going to put all little gummy bears like a kind of painting measuring 5.5 by 6 meters. Ultimately it has to be the Night Watch.”

Own variant of the Night Watch
That world-famous painting by Rembrandt van Rijn shows, among other things, shooters and soldiers. “We came up with our own version. We love sweets. So all the men on the Night Watch become gummy bears.”

The record for a painting with gummy bears is now held by candy manufacturer Haribo. Tanis wants to break that record with a larger copy. About 25 people from Tanis will spend a whole working day laying bears in St. Anthony’s Church.

The Museum Of Young Art (MOYA) is located in the church with all kinds of works of art. In about two weeks, Tanis hopes to be one of them too. “Guinness Book of Records is here and I hope to get another plaque,” Tanis laughs.

Every food record must be eaten
In addition to someone setting the record, there is also someone for food safety and a measurement expert during the attempt on April 14. “Guinness has a rule that every food record must also be eaten. I think that is justified. We stick the gummy bears with glucose so that we can eat it afterwards. We distribute it to colleagues and everyone who is there!”
