Botic van de Zandschulp failed to survive the first round in Rosmalen. The Veenendaal number 29 in the world went down painfully on the Brabant grass in three sets against the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori, the number 62 in the ATP ranking. After the first set won, Van de Zandschulp only won three more games: 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The 23-year-old Ruusuvuori will face the winner of the match between Ilya Ivashka from Belarus and American Mackenzie McDonald in the next round.
Jesper de Jong also failed to qualify for the second round. De Jong, the number 171 in the world, lost in straight sets to the American Jenson Brooksby, the global number 34. It was 7-6 (3) 6-3 for Brooksby.
Tallon groenpoor qualified for the second round in Rosmalen earlier today. Greek track, the number 56 in the world, was too strong in two sets for Slovenian Aljaz Bedene, the global number 161. It was 7-5 7-5 for the Dutchman.
Arianne Hartono also reached the second round of the Dutch grass tournament for men and women. She needed three sets to beat Australian Taylah Preston. It became 6-4 3-6 6-4 for the 26-year-old Dutchman.
Olympic champion Belinda Bencic was too strong for American Madison Brengle in two sets: 6-4 6-3. The 25-year-old Swiss will compete in the second round against the Russian Anna Kalinskaja, who was too strong for the Dutch Suzan Lamens in the first round on Monday with 7-6 (5) 6-3.
Robin Haase failed to reach the second round in Rosmalen. The 35-year-old from Hagenaar lost in straight sets to American Sam Querrey: 6-3 6-2.
Haase, who dropped to 256th place in the world ranking, had received a wildcard from the organization in Rosmalen. With his American opponent, the number 107, but once number 11 in the world ranking, he had a tough draw. Querrey gave Haase no chance in two sets, broke him once in the first set and twice in the second set.
