Painful conclusions at FC Volendam: “No hunger seen against direct competitor”

FC Volendam has ‘let the cheese eat from the bread’ on a visit to Fortuna Sittard. That was the conclusion of trainer Wim Jonk after the 2-0 defeat. “I haven’t seen any hunger against a direct competitor.”

Volendam has not been in the game for a moment against the Limburgers, who had only one point less before. Jonk is particularly concerned about the carelessness on the ball and the lack of struggle. “Then you end up in the drop from the rain.”

In the first half Fortuna Sittard was opportunistic and forced it with a beautiful goal from Úmaro Embaló. Bilal Ould-Chikh’s red card and the second goal against before halftime completed the drama for Volendam. “Ninety percent fell through the lower limit,” says Jonk about the failure of his team.

Remarkable

Captain Damon Mirani thought it was remarkable that his team showed up like that. “We had a very good week of training. You don’t buy anything for that, because we don’t translate it to the game,” says 26-year-old Monnickendammer, who again played as a controlling midfielder.

“I hope the boys look in the mirror”, Jonk continues when asked how things should continue in the coming weeks. Then national champion Ajax waits in the fishing village. “Actually, you don’t need a trainer for this. As a player deep down and as a group of players you should just be ashamed.”
