SC Paderborn put enormous pressure on the top duo of the 2nd Bundesliga with a sovereign victory at Schalke – it was an exclamation mark in the fight for promotion.
In the 2: 0 (1: 0) victory of the SCP on Friday evening (02.05.2025) in Gelsenkirchen-Buer, Raphael Obermair (40th) provided the guest of the guests, shortly after the change Marvin Mehlem (48th) followed the second goal. Paderborn now has only one point behind the HSV (Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Darmstadt 98) and two points on Cologne (Saturday, 8.30 p.m. against Jahn Regensburg) and was also pleased that competitor 1. FC Magdeburg was fully under its own place against Prussia Münster.
Schalke starts properly, but harmless
However, the royal blue came into the game in front of 62,000 spectators. Defensive with good unity and very consistent in the duels, Schalke did not allow a chance in the early quarter of an hour. From the superiority in midfield, however, hardly any of its own goal.
It was only in the 17th minute that it got really dangerous, Paderborn came to two degrees through Sven Michel and then Aaron tenth, but were blocked by the S04 defense with full commitment. Schalke interior defender Tomas Kalas rightly celebrated his excellent defensive performance and really got the fans in the mood.
Heekeren weak, Riemann strong
Shortly afterwards they had the scream on their lips for the first time, but Moussa Sylla narrowly missed Anton Donkor’s cross. From the 35th minute, only Paderborn played. Filip Bilbija missed two good options within two minutes, Michel also left the lead again. It was only Obermair that the 1-0, long overdue in this phase, did not make Justin Heekeren not exactly brilliant in his shot from the back.
Shortly after the goal on the other side, Manuel Riemann showed a significantly better goalkeeper game, who steered the conclusion of Donkor over the crossbar with a good reaction.
Flour meets Paderborn
For the second half, Schalke coach Kees van Wonderen wanted to set new impulses for Amin Younes with Tobias Mohr, but only three minutes after the restart, the SCP followed: Ilyas looked at a dream pass flour through the interface of the royal base chain, this time Heekeren was no accusation.
Schalke then seemed largely disillusioned and could have fell behind by Michel and Calvin Brackelmann. In the 69th minute, Joker Pape Ba had the chance to shorten again, but hit the ball freely in front of Riemann.
A few seconds later, referee Robert Schröder suddenly pulled red against Ron Schallenberg, but, in the view of the video recording, had to recognize that the Schalke had clearly played the ball with Michel in the running duel. The dismissal was collected again, which the hosts no longer helped in the further course of the game.
Schalke in Düsseldorf, Paderborn against Magdeburg
After all, Schallenberg can participate in Düsseldorf on Saturday afternoon of the coming week (1.30 p.m.). Paderborn welcomes 1. FC Magdeburg at the same time.
