Pablo Bañares: “I live life with a punk attitude”

Surprisingly, the word that is repeated the most in the speech of Pablo Bañares it is “structure”. And although it is difficult to understand at first glance, with its striking look and its most histrionic facets on the table, as the talk progresses the concept takes on meaning. “Mine is not a character, it is a person. If I had to represent the way I am, it would be exhausting. I just live honestly and am structured, but not dogmatic”, Sentence. And it is that his many facets, ranging from a beautician doctor to singer, host of mixed martial arts fights and TV host, combine in a perfect routine to brighten up his days. Married and father of a son, he prefers to keep his family out of his public exhibitions, although they undoubtedly accompany his beautiful madness: they live with him in the self-styled “Embassy of Transilvania”, in Belgrano R.

News: What came first, the doctor or the artist?

Pablo Bañares: It was parallel. It’s hereditary, my dad was a doctor and he was also a tango singer. At home I grew up with musicians and watching my father get up at 7 in the morning to go to the doctor’s office. You do not repeat the story of your parents, you are your father. I am my father and I am my grandfather. Today my son sees the same thing: I get up at 7 in the morning to go to the office and yet the night before I was rehearsing.

News: Do you consider both your jobs?

Bañares: Yes, but the word work must be assimilated to happiness, because I do not associate it with an effort, if not with something energizing. I have a job as a doctor and one as an entertainer. Within the work of the entertainment show I have several edges. I play the piano and am the singer and emcee of my three bands. I also have a program every Thursday on El Garage TV, “Customizados”, and I am a host of MMA fights. Now I’m also going to be the host of “Titans in the Ring.” My three bands are Los Coviders, Europa Europa and Bañares Rock, with which I make my own songs. With them I made a multimedia artistic project of 100 love songs, each one with a video clip. For 10 years I filmed a video clip per month in different languages and styles, but with the same protagonist. It is something that has never been done anywhere in the world.

News: How do you have time for everything you do?

Bañares: I am structured and persevering. I have a routine for each job. Even for networks, because every day I upload content to @pablo_banares. And I do not make a reality show of my life, it is part of the entertainment show.

News: It is very politically incorrect. Are you interested in provoking?

Bañares: Yes, all my life. It’s a punk attitude. I say that I am structured but not dogmatic, because dogma is a pigeonhole, and structure gives you a beacon of direction. I do this show with work perseverance. I am an analytical person, not so emotional, although it seems otherwise.

News: Today there is also a culture of cancellation, do you suffer from it?

Bañares: Society has become more sincere but more fanatical. Fanaticism is what goes hand in hand with dogma, not with structure. The structure has to do with the container, and the idea, with the content. If you have explosive ideas, as I do, as disruptive, the continent has to be rigid to contain that volcano that constantly comes out of my mouth. That is a structure for it to flow and go to fruition, to happiness, joy and love.

News: How was the Transylvanian Embassy born?

Bañares: This house was built in 1895. My father bought it in 1980 because we lived next door, as an investment next to another neighboring piece of land. It was already to be demolished, but when I turned 21 I moved to the only two rooms that had electric light, in order to have my parties and meetings. At 23 I put together a band and we started rehearsing here. In the midst of Menem times, this house became a stronghold of musicians and people who wanted to have a good time. When I was 24 I graduated and my father wanted to give me the inheritance that he was going to leave me, which was my education, a house and a car. And I chose to stay with this house, to which to this day I continue to make repairs and where something is constantly happening. The thing about the Transylvanian embassy was one of these punk attitude occurrences. I like to produce fantasies, and I do it by lying close to the truth. Because Transylvania exists, but it is not a country but a region, and as such, it cannot have an embassy.

News: It is part of his black humor.

Bañares: At 23, a friend gave me a coffin. And since then he has decorated my house, currently it is in the rehearsal room lined in leopard. From there I began to use that lack of respect for the dogma of death. When I put up the embassy poster, I added things to make it more true: the sentry box, the wires, the flag. And 15 years ago, when my son was born, I thought I needed a normal car – I always had old collection cars – to do the garden pool and also move my band. I decided to buy a hearse, a drawer-carrying Ford Falcon. I took off the flats and turned it into some kind of limousine. When people hear only one thing, it strikes them as weird. But when you watch the entire movie, you realize that mine is an entertainment concept.

News: Did it cost you to sell it?

Bañares: Emotionally yes. There are many things I do just to avoid harming my son; Today at 14 I can’t have a hearse on my doorstep. Today I have to turn off a bit to be so different.

News: What’s next in your universe?

Bañares: I distributed life in three 25 years. The first were to study, the second to work and generate, and the third 25 are to maintain what I generated. I’m 51, I’m there. I do not want to generate anything new, if not to continue with what I did. People may see me as far-fetched or intense, but it’s simple: my wishes are orders to me.
