Pawn brokers have a bad image in these times of housing shortage. Many celebrities also rent out homes as an investment, including DJ Tiësto. He is applauded: “Very beautiful!”
There is a lot of aversion to pawnbrokers in society. Critics say that houses are there to live in and not to experience a return. One of the biggest annoyances? Stars and influencers who boast with their returns from real estate. One of them is Ryan Babel, who brags in films that he first class celebrates thanks to its rental income.
To boast
Özcan Akyol thinks this is puking, he recently said in De Oranjezomer. “What he forgets to say is that he buys all kinds of properties in Amsterdam, for example. Those are social rental homes.”
He roars: “He then buys them up and rents them out for commercial prices, so he is also spoiling the entire housing market in the Netherlands in the meantime. And with that he will brag on the internet, like: look at me being busy.”

It’s disgusting, says Özcan. “We have a problem with housing in the Netherlands. A lot of people stand in rows and don’t get a house. Starters, people who just got married, I don’t know what. And what he is actually saying here is: you have to invest in real estate, you have to spoil the market.”
He continues: “What kind of nutcase are you to think this is cool? Why do you have to flaunt this? What’s in it? Are you lucky or something? Why does it have to be on the internet?”
Praise for Tiesto
Dj Tiësto is also a pawnbroker, but he gets compliments. “I think he owns half of Breda”, exults sidekick Niels van Baarlen on Radio 538. “He really has there… When it comes to real estate… Walk around the city with someone and then it is: ‘This is from Tiësto, that belongs to Tiesto.’ Yes Yes Yes. He also bought a retirement home, right?”

Niels: “Yes, I think so. On the other hand: he comes from there, so it is also good of course.”
