Overturned canoe drifts out of harbor, triggering massive search

On the Markermeer near Bovenkarspel there was a major search for a short time after a capsized canoe was seen. Several boats, a helicopter and a plane were deployed.

A passer-by had seen the canoe and then called the emergency services. That happened around 1.50 pm. The paddles belonging to the canoe were also found. The big search was started.

Not much later, however, the emergency services received a call from the owner of the canoe, after which the search could be stopped. The owner turned out to be lying in the Broekerhaven unsuspectingly.

The owner had secured the canoe behind his or her sailboat, but had lost it for an unknown reason. After this, the canoe was driven from the harbor towards the Markermeer.
