Overjoyed Lucas Schneider the star of Volendam within one season: “Perfect for me”

Already in his first season, Lucas Schneider has become the star of Volendam’s handball players. The German has always had the ambition to play abroad and is completely at home in De Opperdam. “I love the Netherlands so it’s perfect for me,” says Schneider enthusiastically.

Schneider played in Germany’s second tier for eight years. As of 2012, he played over 200 matches for TuS Ferndorf. Still, his departure from Germany came as no surprise. “Handball abroad was always his dream,” says former teammate and friend Jannis Michel. “I knew from an early age that he would leave Germany for a few years.”

Volendam coach Geert Hinskens saw Schneider grow into a decisive player in his team. “A super good boy, a leader in the group and socially strong. He is fantastic at handball. A key player in our team,” says Hinskens.

Best of three

Last week, the team from Volendam won the first prize by winning the cup. Now Geert Hinskens’ team is fighting for the national championship. On Sunday, Volendam lost its first game against Lions, 28-25. Next Sunday is the return and the following week the possibly decisive third game.
