The denouement of the current football season is special, but for probably the bizarre match day once in the Eredivisie we go back to April 29, 2007. PSV was third on goal difference, but took the title on a crazy Sunday afternoon. Jan Kromkamp (44) was then a basic player and speaks of the most beautiful championship ever. “You will never experience such a scenario again.”
AZ had the best papers in the last day of play, since the goal difference was better than that of Ajax (+6) and PSV (+7). Yet things went completely wrong with the Alkmaarders visiting Excelsior: 3-2 defeat. Ajax won 0-2 with Willem II, but PSV was in the longest end by beating Vitesse in Eindhoven 5-1. The goal difference of the team of then trainer Ronald Koeman was one goal better than that of Ajax.
“When we got up the field, we felt that something special was going to happen,” says former international Jan Kromkamp. “The atmosphere in the Philips Stadium was electrically charged and not because Philips was the main sponsor.”
According to Kromkamp, preparation for the last match was not finished from other duels. “We just agreed to work hard and to make as many goals as possible. We tried that from the first minute. In the break we heard the intermediate positions, but nothing changed for us. In the second half the positions changed so fast, but we were only busy with goals. If there was a VAR at that time, we would have won the competition with a much larger figures.”

After the last whistle, the players and technical staff of PSV remained on the field awaiting the other games. “The moment we heard that the title was inside, exploded the stadium. We had pulled it over as a team, super button. I saw so much joy around me and in the stands. It was a great party that day and at the ceremony.”

If PSV takes the title at Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday, Kromkamp calls it right. “You have to grab what you are entitled to. PSV has the most attractive football from all the teams, then you deserve to become champions. They have had a dip, Ajax has now. It is difficult to judge from outside, football is sometimes elusive. That PSV knows to turn is handsome.
The former player of Liverpool and Villarreal, among others, expects PSV to be in trouble in Rotterdam on Sunday. “If they lose it now, I will eat my shoe,” says the trainer of amateur club CSV Apeldoorn. “They just have to perform their tasks and not think about a championship. There are whole experienced players who take care of that, such as Luuk de Jong and Ivan Perisic. Pressure does not have to be wrong, you just have to extend the right line.”
