The Ottawa Senators celebrated a 7-1 victory over the Washington Capitals. The 1,500th Alex Ovechkin’s regular season game was one to forget.
At the game at Capital One Arena, Ovechkin became the eighth player in NHL history to play 1,500 games for a franchise. However, the 40-year-old Russian was denied his 900th goal.
“Disappointing,” said coach Spencer Carbery about his team’s performance, which only forced Senators goalie Linus Ullmark to make 12 saves: “We weren’t good in any area. That was an embarrassing performance.”
The preliminary decision came at the beginning of the second period when Ottawa gave the hosts three goals in less than three minutes and went from 1-0 to 4-0.
Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens (2 goals each, 1 assist) were the Senators’ top scorers. Nick Cousins, Shane Pinto and Thomas Chabot also scored. Tim Stützle, Claude Giroux, David Perron and Artem Zub each contributed 2 assists.
Trevor van Riemsdyk scored for Washington to make it 1:5. Goalie Charlie Lindgren caught all seven goals without being taken off the ice.
Green: “That was a strong performance”
“That was a strong performance,” said Senators coach Travis Green: “We were very focused from the start. When you beat a team like Washington, you played a good game.”
The Senators have nine points after nine games and will host the Boston Bruins on Tuesday (12:30 a.m.). For Washington (12 points) it was the third defeat in the sixth home game. The Capitals continue their game against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday (1:30 a.m.).
