Desperate attempts by medical staff were not enough to save the 15-year-old girl. The young woman arrived at the Grassi hospital in Ostia in anaphylactic shock and died in the late evening of April 2nd. Originally from Maddaloni, in the province of Caserta, she played basketball. He was in Ostia to participate with his team, Unia Maddaloni, in the “Mare di Roma Trophy in Pink” tournament. She was allergic to milk proteins, and during a dinner with her classmates she started to feel ill. Neither the medicines he had with him nor the emergency rush to hospital helped. The Prosecutor’s Office has opened a case for manslaughter: it is suspected that the cause of the fatal illness was allergy, but the first answers will come from the autopsy.
The tournament was immediately suspended: “In such a dramatic moment, we believe it is our duty to stop, respecting the pain of the family, the teammates and all the people involved. Sure of your understanding, we inform you that for this edition the Mare di Roma Trophy stops here. There are no adequate words to describe such a great and unjust loss. The entire organisation, the participating teams and the staff rally with emotion around the family of the young athlete and her club, expressing their most heartfelt and sincere condolences”, wrote the company organizing the event, Alfa Omega, in a post on social media. The mayor of Maddaloni, Andrea De Filippo, and the FIP also expressed their condolences. “A loss that I feel particularly intensely also due to the feelings of esteem and affection that have always linked me to her family. It is a day of profound sadness for all of us. I address my deepest condolences and the most sincere closeness to the parents, Fabio and Antonella, and to all the family members, on my own behalf and that of the entire community. Our sweetest thoughts and prayers go to the little girl.”
