Orange women humiliated by Wiegman’s England two weeks before the European Championship NOW

The Orange Women were humiliated on Friday in the friendly match against the England of former Orange national coach Sarina Wiegman. Due to two blunders by keeper Sari van Veenendaal and a missed penalty by jubilee Sherida Spitse, the Netherlands lost 5-1 in Leeds two weeks before the start of the European Championship.

The Netherlands had an excellent start to the evening, as Lieke Martens opened with a header from a corner kick by Spitse score in the stadium of Lees United. After half an hour of play, it was already level again because Van Veenendaal misjudged a pass from Lucy Bronze.

For the Orange Women, the painful defeat in Leeds is a blow on the way to the European Championship, which starts in England in two weeks. The team of national coach Mark Parsons defends the European title on the other side of the North Sea and, like Wiegman’s England, is one of the title candidates.

The Netherlands also saw strong holder Martens drop out with an injury during the match. The severity of the injury is unknown. Star player Vivianne Miedema only came on in the sixtieth minute because she was not completely fit, while Daniëlle van de Donk made her comeback after half-time after a long injury.

Martens opens score, Van Veenendaal blunders

Without Miedema, who was not completely fit, the Orange Women started the game on Elland Road very well. After the jubilee Spitse had received flowers from Wiegman for her two-hundredth international match, the Netherlands grabbed the host country early by the throat, without forcing many opportunities.

Disastrous evening after miss Spitse

The Netherlands was pushed back by England throughout the second half, but in the 52nd minute they had an imposed chance for the 1-2. Van de Donk was knocked over and only after seeing the images, referee Sandra Braz awarded Bastos a penalty. He missed Spitse in her two hundredth game. She fired from 11 meters on the outside of the post.

A minute later, the ball was in the net on the other side and the dramatic evening of the Orange Women began to take shape. Dominique Janssen was surprised by her opponent Mead, who scored nicely: 2-1.

Things then went from bad to worse for the Orange Women, who barely made it to half of England and defended in a humiliating way. Van Veenendaal also had a lousy evening: when Toone’s 3-1 in the 72nd minute, she completely missed out.

The Netherlands was then lost and also immediately got the 4-1 around the ears. After a shot hit the post, Aniek Nouwen mowed over the ball, after which Caitlin Dijkstra presented the ball to Hemp. She finished well with her left leg, after which Mead further ruined the Netherlands’ evening with the 5-1.
