In view of the threat posed by drones at airports, Germany’s airlines are calling for consistent political action.
• Airlines demand clear responsibilities and powers to act in the event of drone threats
• Federal government plans to expand specialized drone defense units
• DroneShield benefits from strong sales growth and expansion into civil markets
“If there is a threat, drones must be able to be shot down,” said Peter Gerber, President of the Federal Association of German Airlines (BDF), to the newspapers of the Funke media group. It urgently needs to be clarified who is responsible in a threatening situation.
“It annoys me that the urgency of drones is only now being recognized,” said Gerber, who is also the boss of the airline Condor. “We have been highlighting the problem for ten years.”
Because of more and more incidents involving drones at airports, the federal government wants to improve its drone defense. This year, the federal police’s special units are to be supplemented by a drone defense unit. A planned federal and state drone defense center is also scheduled to go into operation in 2025. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) announced both on Wednesday.
According to Gerber, ticket prices will increase
Gerber said that detecting and defending against drones were sovereign tasks to combat danger and terrorism and that the state had to pay for them. “At civil airports, the federal police must have the authority to stop drones – and, if necessary, to shoot them down.” The drone problem is quickly becoming expensive for airlines. “An interruption for an hour always means millions in damage.”
When asked about the development of ticket prices, Gerber said they would definitely not be cheaper. “Prices will probably continue to rise because state location costs are also rising.”
Opportunity for DroneShield & Co.
The current security situation offers potential business opportunities for providers of drone defense systems. This includes the Australian drone defense specialist DroneShield, which is seeing explosive demand for its security systems. DroneShield’s financial development shows impressive momentum. In the first half of 2025, the company already achieved sales of over $72 million – more than three times compared to the same period last year. The order backlog has reached a record level of over 176 million US dollars (as of July 2025). Particularly notable is the sales pipeline, which has grown to over $2 billion, with Europe and the US standing out as the strongest growth markets. These numbers indicate sustainable growth potential.
AI-supported software as a recurring revenue driver
DroneShield is increasingly relying on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model that includes quarterly AI-powered updates and continually updates systems against new drone threats. This strategy creates recurring revenue streams and increases customer loyalty. The software enables all systems to function optimally both individually and in combination – whether handheld, vehicle-mounted or stationary. This flexibility makes DroneShield products particularly attractive for use in safety-critical areas such as energy, government facilities and correctional facilities.
Expansion into civilian markets increases growth potential
While military applications continue to be a core business, DroneShield is increasingly penetrating the civilian security market. Protecting critical infrastructure such as power grids, airports and prisons is becoming increasingly important. Media reports highlight how modern drone defense systems are successfully used in prisons to combat unauthorized drone deliveries. With the presentation of the new product SentryCiv for civil infrastructure, DroneShield is expanding its offering specifically for this growing market.
DroneShield shares show impressive development
The strong outlook for the business is also reflected in DroneShield’s share price. The company has already gained over 730 percent on the Australian stock exchange this year.
