Dutch people can indicate online what they think are the best measures to make traffic safer. On a special website, everyone can indicate which measures they would like to see, while also taking the costs into account.
The website is hoeveiligonderweg.nl. The ministry will include the results of this consultation in an additional package of road safety measures. More will be known about this before the summer.
All kinds of scenarios
Dutch people can give their opinion about the extremes of all kinds of measures. This also includes measures that are not in line with the ministry’s current plans. For example, people can indicate their preference for introducing mandatory helmet use, while the ministry is now committed to encouraging voluntary use of helmets.
Dutch people can indicate how much money they want to invest for ten types of measures. To the right of this you can immediately see the decrease this will cause in terms of road deaths and road injuries. There is a maximum budget that can be spent.
The questionnaire is also presented to a group of people who are representative of the Dutch population. However, the ministry believes it is important to give all people an opportunity to think about this, which is why the questionnaire is also available to everyone online.
Breaking trend
In 2023, there were 684 fatalities and 7,400 serious road injuries. Most victims are cyclists.
The number of road injuries is expected to increase in the coming years, even if additional measures are taken. According to research, the main causes are population growth, more kilometers driven and that people continue to cycle as they get older.
Despite these negative expectations, the ministry is determined to reduce the number of traffic accidents and thus to break the expected upward trend. The consultation helps to discover which measures Dutch people could support.
