Only Liverpool keeps pace with Feyenoord: Rotterdammers carry the Netherlands towards Portugal | Dutch football

CoefficientsCoefficient king Feyenoord makes Dutch football seriously dream of two direct Champions League places. The team from Rotterdam reached the semi-finals of the Conference League and will therefore have at least two more games to expand their virtual lead over Portugal.

Points obtained

Feyenoord saved the Dutch honour, which got a big blow after the elimination of PSV. The Eindhoven team lost 1-2 against Leicester City and saw the semi-final dream go up in smoke. Thanks to Feyenoord, however, 0.600 points came in the drawer. The victory over Slavia Prague was rewarded with 0.400 points, while reaching the last four was good for one bonus point. Due to the number of participants at the start, this must be divided by five.

Dutch football relies mainly on Feyenoord’s performance this season. The team from Rotterdam has provided no less than 17.00 coefficient points in recent months, making it one of the best performing teams in Europe. Only Liverpool can keep up with the semi-finalist this season. It should of course be noted that Feyenoord, unlike, for example, Manchester City (14.00 points), acts in the weaker Conference League and already had opportunities in the preliminary rounds to work on the points total.

1. Feyenoord and Liverpool – 17.00
2. Bayern Munich – 16.00
3. Chelsea, Eintracht Frankfurt and Olympique Lyon – 15.00

Portugal points

Although the quarter-final of the Champions League was the final station for Benfica, the Portuguese top club still made 0.166 points thanks to the spectacular 3-3 draw against Liverpool. However, that was it for Portugal, as SC Braga went down after extra time against the Rangers of Giovanni van Bronckhorst. After two red cards for Braga, the Scots won 3-1.

As a result, Portugal will no longer have trump cards in the coming matches to stay in the track of the Netherlands and all the signals for a historic catch-up race for the Netherlands are green. The European season is over for the Portuguese.

Current state

The Netherlands finds itself in a no man’s land towards the conclusion of the European campaign. The gap to number six Portugal is far too big to make up for this season, while the pursuers are no longer a threat either. The Netherlands remains in seventh place this season. However, the years that the Netherlands stayed outside the top ten and therefore did not deliver a champion to the Champions League, are therefore in the painful past for the time being.

5. France – 59,915
6. Portugal – 53.382
7. NETHERLANDS – 48,500
8. Austria – 38,850

Virtual booth

The virtual lead over Portugal grew again, so that the Netherlands can open the hunt for two direct tickets for the group stage of the Champions League next season. After this season, the results from the dramatic 2017/2018 season will expire. That means that Portugal’s large lead will evaporate at the start of the new season.

Virtually, the Netherlands now has 1,884 points more. In addition, Feyenoord gives it the chance to only expand the lead. Feyenoord will have a maximum of three more chances for this: in a diptych against Olympique Marseille, Arne Slot’s team hopes to qualify for the final in Tirana. As in recent years, all Dutch hopes towards the denouement are not based on Ajax, but it is Feyenoord that should provide the European season with a golden edge.

6. NETHERLANDS – 45,600
7. Portugal – 43,716
