The 993 is the latest Porsche to feature the air-cooled aspirated 6-cylinder flat boxer and the RS Clubsport is the ultimate celebration of this sports concept, sharpened even more for the track. A truly special model that we got to drive during the event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Carrera RS 2.7. Just over 200 examples produced between 1995 and 1996 and a price that today exceeds 300,000 euros, the Carrera RS Clubsport is a car with which to leave home on Sunday morning to go and beat the lap record at any circuit, relying on 300 Hp and 355 Nm of torque. In fact, a racing car with a license plate that has raised the bar for high-performance sports cars designed for the track but capable of driving on the road. Characterized by aerodynamics pushed to the maximum and by a weight reduction taken to the extreme, the Clubsport was also the last model of this series to carry the Carrera name, which would soon be replaced by GT3 and GT3 RS.

Porsche 993 Carrera RS Clubsport: how it’s made

The first thing that strikes you when you are in front of the 993 Clubsport is the huge rear wing that dominates the scene. The appearance is made even more aggressive by a set-up that runs 40 mm closer to the ground than the Carrera RS from which it derives, but it is not enough because there are other solutions that suggest that the Clubsport is not joking at all. Just think of the roll bar welded inside the passenger compartment which increases torsional rigidity by 40%. No composite materials are used outside, but the weight loss diet she was subjected to saves an additional 50 kg compared to the standard version, for a dry weight of only 1,260 kg. In fact, the passenger compartment lacks any kind of comfort: there are no rear seats, no upholstery or upholstery, no air conditioning or anything else. Only two Recaro seats with 6-point belts, steering wheel, pedals and gear lever.

Porsche 993 Carrera RS Clubsport: technology advances

In terms of engines, the big difference with the starting point are the lower forged pistons treated with Grafal, a coating that lowers friction and improves sliding. The wheels are 18 “with 225/35 tires at the front and 265/35 at the rear, the braking system relies on a set of 4-piston aluminum monobloc calipers, derived from the 993 turbo, and 4 perforated 322 discs. mm. The gearbox is a 6-speed manual with shortened ratios to improve acceleration, with the result that the Clubsport disposes of the practice of 0-100 in 4 and a half seconds to reach 280 km / h. Do not miss the Sachs self-locking differential with 40% locking in acceleration and 65% in deceleration and the single-mass flywheel.

Porsche 993 Carrera RS Clubsport: how to drive

The word that best describes this car before getting on board is: intimidating. We find ourselves dealing with what apparently is a real beast, which, however, turns out to be different at the wheel. The 993 is much closer to today’s sports cars, starting with the excellent driving position which, despite having few adjustment possibilities, is able to accommodate even those over 1.80 m tall. The ergonomics are fantastic and the controls are easy and intuitive to use. In particular the gearbox, which has precise and soft grafts even if the lever travel is not among the shortest. In general, the very neutral dynamic balance is striking, with the car that never puts the driver in crisis: once you get used to it, you can take advantage of the technical package without risking too much in the curves. The low weight and the not exaggerated power help to enjoy it practically everywhere, what literally leaves you amazed is the boxer delivery: linear, clean, without jerks and very sweet, with the speed that rises progressively and a soundtrack that invades the passenger compartment over 5,000 rpm. Perhaps this is the 911 that best defines the philosophy of the 90s and almost 30 years later it teaches a lesson to learn from. Today too often we let ourselves be captivated by numbers, finding ourselves aboard cars so powerful that you don’t enjoy the speed, because everything happens too quickly. From this point of view, Clubsport teaches that horses are not the most important thing when it comes to driving pleasure.
