One dead and more than 20 injured in shooting at Super Bowl victory party with a million spectators | Abroad

updateOne person was killed and more than 20 people were injured in a shooting during a victory celebration for the Super Bowl players in Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday. Three suspects have been arrested, but nothing is yet known about a possible motive. The parade, which attracted an estimated one million people, was organized because of the Super Bowl win of the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday.

The shooting took place at a historic station building in Kansas City, not far from where a victory parade had just been held in the city on the occasion of the Super Bowl sporting event, the decisive match in the highest competition of American football. Last Sunday, the American football players of the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl for the second year in a row.

Dead and more than 20 injured

The shooting left one person dead, according to Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves. In addition, according to fire chief Ross Grundyson, 21 people have now suffered gunshot wounds. Eight injured people were in critical condition after the shooting and were taken to area hospitals within ten minutes. Seven others suffered “life-threatening injuries” and six others had only minor injuries.

Later in the evening, several hospitals told CNN that they had treated at least 29 people injured in the shooting, including 19 with gunshot wounds.

Children are also among the victims

No information has yet been released about the identities of the victims. According to Grundyson, there may be children among the injured. Police say they are still working to determine the “total number of victims” and emphasize that this is an ongoing investigation.

Immediately after the incident, the police arrested two armed suspects, and a third suspect was subsequently arrested, police chief Graves said during a second press conference about the shooting. Nothing is yet known about the circumstances of the shooting. The police say they have also “recovered firearms”, but have not provided any further details for the time being.

“Senseless act of violence”

The Kansas City Chiefs shared a statement via Twitter in which the club called the shooting a “senseless act of violence.” “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all of Kansas City.” Some individual players also shared messages of support on social media. The National Football League (NFL) also said its thoughts are “with the victims and everyone affected.”

The Kansas City shooting is the 47th mass shooting in the US this year. This was reported by ‘The Gun Violence Archive’, an American NGO that documents gun violence, on X (formerly Twitter). That amounts to an average of more than one mass shooting per day.

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting, according to the White House.
