A classic from August 12, 2019.![]()
On Thursday (August 15th) the time has come: Tarantino’s latest work “Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood” will also be released in cinemas in Germany. Anyone who hasn’t avoided the internet in the past few weeks probably hasn’t been able to completely avoid one or two spoilers. One controversial scene in particular has already been the subject of increasing discussion.
In this, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) meets the actor and martial arts master Bruce Lee (played by Mike Moh) and the two engage in a tough battle. Lee’s daughter expressed harsh criticism of the scene, which allegedly misrepresented her father as arrogant and a gossip.
As it turns out, this scene is already a modified version. In the original version, Cliff Booth was supposed to easily win the fight against Bruce Lee. However, Brad Pitt considered this unrealistic and disrespectful. Several members of the crew also agreed and spoke to Tarantino’s conscience. Thus, in the final version, the conflict is interrupted before a winner can be determined.
“It’s depressing when your idol gets beaten”
As Robert Alonzo, the film’s co-stunt coordinator, explained in an interview with The Huffington Post, it was difficult for many to watch the iconic Lee lose to the stuntman. “I know Brad expressed concerns about that. Even for me, someone who sees Bruce Lee as a role model, not just in martial arts but in his philosophy and outlook on life, it was depressing to see him get beaten up. Brad was against it. He said, ‘It’s Bruce Lee, dude.'”
