Since last season, the play-offs for European football have been decided in a single match. AZ has the home advantage, because the Alkmaarders are the highest in the regular position. Heerenveen ended with ninth place as the lowest team that is eligible for the play-offs.

It is striking that Heerenveen performs outdoors this season sadly. Only seven points were achieved in eighteen games outside the Abe Lenstrastadion. No other club did so badly outdoors this season. Low point at the Frisians was the match in Alkmaar, the one with A record score of 9-1 was lost. At home Heerenveen took revenge and AZ fell 3-1.
At the Alkmaarders, Troy Parrott and Jordy Clasie return to the selection after a long injury. Parrott scored four of the nine goals against SC Heerenveen in mid -September.
