On the election of the new Head of State the unknown factor of the great electors

On the match for the election of the new President of the Republic, whose kick-off will be on Monday 24 January, with the first vote by the parliament in joint session, not only hovers the lack, at present, of a candidacy shared by part of the main political forces. There is also an uncertainty connected with the number of so-called “big electors”, the senators, deputies and regional delegates who will be called to vote for the next Head of State. The electors will be 1008 or 1009 (it depends on whether the seat of the dem Porta succeeding Adriano Cairo will be proclaimed before the 24th).

To date, the electors are 1007

At the moment they are 1007 the Great Electors who will meet in common session in Montecitorio. But it is very likely that in view of January 24 they will become 1009: the January 16 there is a vote in the supplementary in Rome to assign the seat of the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri and the junta in the Senate has already voted to assign the seat of Adriano Cairo, who fell for fraud, to the dem, who was also elected in America by Fabio Porta. Only the communication of the proclamation is missing in the hall of Palazzo Madama. To compose the plenum of the assembly 58 local delegates are added to the deputies and senators of the XVIII legislature: in each Region two exponents for the majority and one for the minority will be chosen in the next two weeks, except in Valle d’Aosta where they will be chosen. only one.

The regional delegates

The regional delegates have not yet been elected but, according to who won the regional elections, they should be 33 to the center right e 25 to the center left. The election of the next President of the Republic is not going to be simple at all, given that neither side has an absolute majority to elect their candidate in the fourth ballot. And also because this Parliament was born on the wave of the great M5S victory which, however, has crumbled over the years: just think that the pentastellated parliamentarians at the beginning of the legislature were 338 and now 233 have remained, between jacket changes and new groups. number of elected representatives, all merged into the big group of the Mixed group, therefore it does not respond to any indication of the party and it is difficult to take them for certain in a calculation of majorities. Here you are the balance of power, on paper, of the various political forces:

Center-right

The center-right can count on 451 major voters who refer to the parties within the coalition: 197 are from the League, 127 from Fi, 58 from FdI, 31 from Coraggio Italia-Cambiamo-Idea, 5 from Us with Italy, to whom add the 33 regional delegates.

Center left with M5S

It can count on 415 votes if IV is excluded, on 464 if Renzi’s party is also counted (44). The Democratic Party has 133 major voters, M5S has 233, LeU 18, Bruno Tabacci’s Democratic Center has 6 deputies. To this block are added the 25 regional delegates, plus Gianclaudio Bressa, enrolled in the group for Autonomies but elected with the Democratic Party. If you add the parliamentarians of Action- + Europe (5) the number increases but the alliance is not obvious.
