Olympia 2022: Surprise: German cross-country relay wins precious metal

What an achievement: The German cross-country skiers won bronze in Sochi. In Beijing they were not considered favorites – but in the relay they managed to surprise themselves with a medal.

They weren’t favorites and surprised everyone: the German women’s cross-country relay team impressed in a strong competition and surprisingly secured a medal – silver.

Gold went to Russia. Sweden secured the bronze medal. The cross-country nation of Norway went away empty-handed. The German quartet around Katherine Sauerbrey, Katharina Hennig, Victoria Carl and Sofie Krehl could be happy about it.

“It’s unbelievable”

Halfway through the relay race, the German team was even in the lead. Before that, starting runner Sauerbrey, who had recommended herself for the relay with eleventh place over 10 km, handed over to Katharina Hennig after a strong race in second place. She was the first to hand it over to Victoria Carl, followed by Russia in second place. Norway’s Therese Johaug came in third at half-time. Carl was also the first to hand over to Sofie Krehl. She lost on the route to Russia, but secured the silver medal for the German team.

The starting runner Katherine Sauerbrey said overwhelmed on ZDF: “I’m so surprised myself that it’s going so well, it’s unbelievable.” The last medal for the German cross-country skiers was in 2014 with bronze in the relay in Sochi.
