Kahn about Wirtz: “We had a lot of contact with him”

Oliver Kahn currently does not hold a position at a club. The former Bayern chairman was a guest in the “Doppelpass” – and also spoke about Florian Wirtz.
From July 2021 to May 2023, Oliver Kahn was CEO of FC Bayern. Since then, the former goalkeeper has not taken up a position at a club. On Sunday, Kahn was a guest on “Doppelpass” and spoke, among other things, about Florian Wirtz.
The ex-Bayern boss only found words of praise for the Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder. He said of the 21-year-old: “One of his qualities is his head. The mental aspect.” Kahn illustrated this directly using an example from Leverkusen’s game on Saturday against SC Freiburg (5:1)
The former FC Bayern goalkeeper about Wirtz: “He misses a penalty, that doesn’t interest the boy at all. He continues to play his game. On the contrary, he gets even better.” Wirtz was fouled by Freiburg’s Ritsu Doan and received a penalty. However, Freiburg’s keeper Noah Atubolu was there and saved. But that didn’t faze Wirtz. He scored himself and also made three assists. Freiburg’s Michael Gregoritsch praised him, saying that Bayer and “all of Germany” were “blessed” with the player.
Kahn explained Wirtz’s qualities: “His whole attitude on the pitch, even as a young player, was outstanding in terms of his manner and his demeanor. We also had a lot of contact with him. He’s doing very well because He is very thoughtful. He is already thinking carefully about what the next step could be. At the moment the whole world is open to him.
Nevertheless, Kahn could imagine that Witz would extend his working paper in Leverkusen. “That’s how he ticks a bit,” says the former German national goalkeeper. Wirtz’s current contract in Leverkusen runs until 2027. However, according to various media reports, there are said to be good discussions with Wirtz from those responsible at Bayer regarding an extension.
