Officially: Hertha BSC goes into the 2nd division with coach Dárdai

After Bundesliga relegation

What was already in the offing before the Bundesliga relegation is now official: Hertha BSC is going into the 2023/24 second division season with coach Pál Dárdai. The Berliners announced this on Thursday morning.

“We are pleased that Pál will help shape the blue and white new start as head coach. He lives Hertha BSC and with his diligence, his dedication and his passion for our club, he is the right man for the upcoming challenges that we will overcome together,” said Benjamin Weber, sports director of the capital club, who is currently still fighting for the license.

Dárdai himself explained: “I am very satisfied and happy. Thomas Herrich (Managing Director; ed.), Benjamin Weber and I had good and honest discussions. I have the feeling that we all work, want to work and will work together for the good of Hertha BSC. (…) It’s a huge opportunity for Hertha BSC to develop a mentality and game culture. We have to know that the 2nd Bundesliga is not a sure-fire success!”

The 47-year-old Hungarian had taken over the pros of the “Old Lady” for the third time in mid-April as the successor to the hapless Sandro Schwarz, but was no longer able to bring about relegation. According to reports, Hertha is also said to have held talks with other coach candidates, since the new investor “777 Partners” in particular brought some names into play. In the end, however, the joint decision was made in favor of Dárdais.

Documents have been submitted: Hertha BSC is fighting for the license for the second division

On Wednesday, the club, which was in financial difficulties, announced that it had “submitted all the necessary documents and evidence for the licensing for the 2023/24 season in the 2nd Bundesliga to the DFL in good time”. Now Hertha BSC has to wait for the decision. “We would like to thank the league for the constructive exchange. At the same time, we would like to thank our cooperation partners and all supporters of Hertha BSC, who have accompanied this process closely by our side,” said Managing Director Herrich.

Which personnel Hertha will start with after the summer is currently still completely open. The transfer of Maximilian Mittelstädt (26) to VfB Stuttgart became official on Wednesday. In an interview with Deutschlandfunk, President Kay Bernstein was recently cautious about the immediate resurgence: “To announce a goal now would be nonsense. (…) We have the licensing issue, we have the restructuring issue. We have the economic restructuring issue, we have the management change.
