Official: FC Barcelona extended with Gavi – billion release clause

Contract expired in 2023

Clubs that had had hopes of signing midfield talent Gavi on a free transfer next summer must now bury them. After weeks of waiting, FC Barcelona officially announced the extension of the expiring contract with the 18-year-old homegrown player on Wednesday morning. Gavi is tied with the Catalans from now until 2026, where he has been one of the top performers since last season, increasing his market value to €60m so far.

No player in the world is valued up to the age of 18 anywhere near as highly as the Spanish international. Should a club show interest, the exit clause that has now been set, which is mandatory in Spanish football, should be enough of a deterrent: 1 billion euros would have to be put on the table to pry Gavi out of his contract. The La Masia graduate thus joins a ranks of professionals, primarily from FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, who have also signed such a high clause. This applies to ten professionals in LaLiga, the exception of the two top clubs is Sergio Canales (31) from Real Betis.

The extension had been verbally agreed for months – but in the course of the squad change and the financial situation of the past few years, Barça was only able to make personnel decisions gradually. On the one hand, Gavi helped that Miralem Pjanic (32) had moved to Sharjah Cultural SC in the United Arab Emirates after the European transfer deadline, on the other hand, the upper salary limit from the Spanish league association after the sale of club assets and the departure of numerous well-earning players recently became clear raised.
