Now it’s official: Pep Guardiola has extended his expiring contract with English champions Manchester City. As the “Citizens” announced, the 51-year-old Spaniard is now bound until 2025 – his previous working paper would have expired at the end of the season. Guardiola has been in charge of Man City since 2016 and during this time has won four English league titles, four Carabao Cups, one FA Cup and two Community Shields – in 2018/19 even all four titles in one year, which no English professional team had previously achieved .
The Athletic had previously reported that Guardiola’s new contract was initially for a year with an option for a further season. There is no mention of this in Man City’s press release. “I am very happy that I can stay at Manchester City for another two years,” said the former Bayern coach. “I can’t thank everyone at the club enough for putting their trust in me. I’m happy and I feel good here. I have everything I need to do my job as well as possible. I know the next chapter of this club will be great in the next decade. That has happened in the last ten years and it will happen in the next ten years because this club is so stable.”

Guardiola has not yet achieved the big goal of winning the Champions League with City – although he has been able to invest 1.06 billion euros in new players since arriving in 2016. No other coach even remotely spent that much during this period. The current 23-strong squad cost 1.01 billion euros, and here too Guardiola and his club are clearly the world leaders.
City could win the Premier League for the third straight season this season but are five points behind Arsenal in the first half of the season. In the Champions League, the world’s most valuable team meets Bundesliga club RB Leipzig in the round of 16.
