Oberliga West 1953/54 & 1954/55: 1. FC Köln and Rot-Weiss Essen celebrate championships

All match reports from 1947–1963

Another milestone has been added to the transfer market database. The 1953/54 and 1954/55 seasons of the Oberliga West can now be viewed in their entirety, which means that all game reports of the 3672 games in the OL West from 1947 to 1963 are complete. The then Oberliga was the predecessor of the Bundesliga, which was created in 1963. The West season was one of five leagues whose best teams played out the champion in a final round.

1. FC Köln became champions of the Oberliga season 53/54 with a one-point lead over Rot-Weiss Essen. In the final round that followed, however, the “Effzeh” missed the final, but in the regular season was the top scorer with club legend Hans Schäfer. The ex-professional, who has died, scored 26 goals in 28 games. In addition, Helmut Rahn, Adi Preißler, Toni Turek, Alfred Kelbassa and legendary coach Hennes Weisweiler, who worked for Rheydter SV in those days, also left their mark.

The following year, Rot-Weiss Essen triumphed in the Oberliga West and, after beating 1. FC Kaiserslautern 4-3 in the final, also celebrated the overall German championship in the final. The title of top scorer was shared by 54/55 SC Preussen Dellbrück’s Heinz Lorenz and Preussen Münster’s Felix Gerritzen with 21 goals each.
