The weekly music ritual, in addition to fun, also has an important social function. It gets residents moving, ensures interaction and creates cheerful chaos in the room. “It’s fun,” says Rietje, laughing, “but also a mess.”
And that is allowed – because for these residents music means freedom, expression and togetherness. What they mainly need now are stands for their tom-toms and cymbals, and perhaps some additional instruments to complete the ensemble. “Music really does something for these people,” says Rietje with conviction. “It’s so important to them.”
