Number of vaccination centers in Berlin will be reduced

The number of corona vaccination centers in Berlin will be reduced. The Karlshorst trotting course center will be open for the last time this Sunday, the health administration announced on Friday.

Negotiations are currently underway with all those involved about the future of other centers, which have not yet been concluded.

“But what we can already say is that Berlin will keep a balanced and focused vaccination offer,” said a spokeswoman for the health administration. “Initially, this includes the vaccination centers, the mobile vaccination teams, but increasingly also the offers of the practices and now also those of some pharmacies.”

According to the health administration, there are currently three vaccination centers commissioned by the Senate and eight vaccination centers commissioned by the Senate in Berlin. In addition, there are temporary vaccination offers by mobile vaccination teams. However, around three quarters of the corona vaccinations are carried out by the resident doctors.

The utilization of the vaccination centers fell significantly in January compared to the previous months. It was 39 percent that month after almost 80 percent in November and December.

In view of this development, according to RBB research, the Senate is considering reducing the number of state-owned vaccination facilities to five. Twelve of the 23 mobile vaccination teams so far should be preserved, the broadcaster reported, citing “health circles”.

The President of the German Red Cross (DRK) in Berlin, Mario Czaja, warned in the RBB “Abendschau” on Thursday against closing too many vaccination centers.

“It costs money to provide infrastructure like a fire brigade, but you wouldn’t abolish it just because no house is on fire at the moment,” said Czaja. You still need a vaccination infrastructure because you don’t know how the pandemic will develop.
