The number of MBO students who stop their education before they get a diploma has fallen slightly last school year. But that percentage is still much higher than for Corona. In Drenthe, the percentage of so -called early school leavers is also higher than the national level. Among other things, the socio -economic background of the students plays an important role.
Last school year, 2.36 percent of Drenthe MBO students stopped their education, a year earlier this was 2.49 percent. Nationally, 2.29 percent of MBO students stopped nationally. For comparison: in the 2019-2020 school year, the number of dropouts was much lower. At the time, 1.64 percent of MBO students in Drenthe.
About half of the young people who stop their MBO education early has made a wrong study choice. They find out that they are not in the right education. But there are other problems on the other half. “The mental well -being of the young people, the pressure they experience in their social lives and grow up in poverty play an important role,” says Kees Bakema.
In the approach to early school leavers, Drenthe is divided into three transit point regions: North and Central Drenthe, Southeast Drenthe and Southwest-Drenthe. Kees Bakema from DC Terra is the program manager in all three regions. He is committed to keeping the number of school leavers as low as possible together with other parties.
According to Bakema, there is an important parallel between minima households and early school leavers. “A big predictor of school -leavers is the number of minima households. Young people growing up in poverty are more likely to stop their education.”
Another aspect that can play a role in the school leavers is of a financial nature. “At MBO it often happens that students do not receive an internship allowance. But they would like to purchase a telephone or a car,” says Bakema. “If you do an internship, you have little time for a part -time job, so young people sometimes decide to get to work right away.”
