Number of barn fires falls: Nederweert second nationwide | 1Limburg

With eight barn fires in the past eight years, Nederweert is in joint second place when it comes to municipalities where the most barn fires occur.

Nederweert shares this dubious honor with Hardenberg in Overijssel. Since 2014, Barneveld has had no fewer than ten barn fires, which puts the municipality in the crown.

4600 pigs
The most violent barn fire of last year also raged in Nederweert. In June 4600 pigs were killed. With a total of 29 barn fires since 2014, Limburg is doing slightly worse than the national average. During that period, animals in Gelderland, Noord-Brabant and Overijssel were particularly affected by such fires, according to figures from the Dutch Association of Insurers.

Cattle breeding
In Limburg the fire brigade often had to turn out for a barn fire in that period, except in Nederweert (with 8 fires) and in Leudal (5 times). Also in Venray, Horst aan de Maas, Venlo and Peel en Maas, more than one stable went up in flames. It is logically the provinces and municipalities with a lot of intensive livestock farming where barn fires occur most.

According to the Dutch Association of Insurers, the number of barn fires has been declining for several years. This is because several measures have been taken to improve safety. For example, the electricity in stables must now be checked every five years to reduce the risk of a short circuit.
