Nuclear energy from thorium: why is this climate solution not (yet) available?

As early as the 1960s, promising research showed that nuclear energy could be generated more safely in a special salt reactor that uses thorium. If its development had continued, it might now have made an important contribution to combating climate change. Why did we miss the boat?
