‘NS is experimenting with variable prices for train journeys outside rush hour’ | Inland

The NS is going to experiment with variable prices for train tickets on the The Hague – Eindhoven route. Those who opt for a quiet train will see that reflected in their wallet, NS CEO Tjalling Smit told the Telegraaf.

With discounts of up to 60 percent on the normal price, NS wants to do everything it can to get travelers back on the train now that the corona measures are over, according to Smit, who is responsible for train tickets within the Board of Directors of NS. and subscriptions.

The fewer passengers on the train, the less you have to pay to travel. Smit: ,,Our travelers are already used to giving a discount when traveling during off-peak hours, but we are now going to offer a customized discount per train ride for the first time. If you buy a ticket in the evening after 8 p.m., you will pay about 60 percent less than during rush hour. And in the morning between 10:30 and 12:00 it will be about 40 percent.”

No subscription is required to take advantage of the discount. However, the train ticket must be purchased at least one day in advance. The NS travel planner shows exactly which departure time and which discount is possible.

The pilot will run until 3 July, after which NS will decide whether it will also be rolled out nationally.
