“Game of Thrones”: We finally know what Ned Stark said before his death

Anyone who knew George RR Martin’s “Game Of Thrones” books was not surprised. But in 2011, when the episode “Baelor” was broadcast, everyone else witnessed what the fantasy series was able to do to its viewers in the first season. It is the episode in which Ned Stark (Sean Bean) is beheaded by Ilyn Payn (Wilko Johnson). This cruelty is the most gruesome original scene in the series. And the catalyst for everything that happens within the plot in the episode.

“I couldn’t get too specific. Because I don’t know if there was a religion like that back then. Whatever there was. I just thought, ‘What would you do if that really happened? You’d probably pray. Would probably mumble a few words. And keep it a secret. You’d keep it to yourself’.”

But one question always remained unanswered. What did Ned Stark whisper before he was killed? Showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss, as well as director Alan Taylor, never wanted to comment. But in an interview with the Huffington Post, Ned Stark actor Sean Bean has now revealed the secret.

“He said a final prayer,” Bean said in the interview. “I couldn’t get too specific. Because I don’t know if there was a religion like that back then. Whatever there was. I just thought, ‘What would you do if that really happened? You’d probably pray. Would probably mutter a few words and keep it a secret. You’d keep it to yourself’.”

However, fans aren’t so sure whether Ned Stark might have whispered “You know nothing, Jon Snow” instead of a prayer…

The actor knew intuitively how to frame the scene: “There’s not much you can really do with your head on a block. The only thing you can do is mutter to yourself.”
