The cost of “the fat loss drug” Ozempic could be $150 – or “much less” than current costs, according to US President Donald Trump.
Trump said this in the Oval Office. In response, Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said the cost of these drugs has not yet been negotiated. The US government is negotiating drug prices with several pharmaceutical companies and has already reached agreements with Pfizer and AstraZeneca.
“But it will be,” Trump said, and Oz replied: “The president will be happy with the outcome, and until he is, we will not complete the negotiations.”
Novo Nordisk shares fall – Ozempic price forecast weighed down by Trump
Novo Nordisk shares came under severe pressure on Friday following statements from US President Donald Trump about the price of weight loss supplements. Ultimately, the share in Denmark fell by 6.37 percent to 342.65 Danish crowns. The decline over the course of the year is 45 percent. There were also signs of losses for the shares of US competitor Eli Lilly before the trading session.
Meanwhile, analysts at JPMorgan were calm. The US President’s statements were in line with their expectations for the outcome of the ongoing negotiations. In addition, Novo Nordisk already offers high discounts for patients of the public health insurance company Medicare. There is therefore no reason to adjust the profit estimates for the Danish pharmaceutical company.
However, the price level mentioned by Trump could seem surprisingly low to some market participants, the JPMorgan experts continued. One should also not forget that lower prices could lead to higher sales volumes.
