Interim coach David Siebers gets three games to permanently recommend the job as the head coach of VfL Bochum. Meanwhile, predecessor Dieter Hecking said goodbye with conciliatory words.
After the separation from Dieter Hecking, the previous A-youth coach of the VfL should definitely remain in office until the next international break as a professional trainer of the Bundesliga relegation. The VfL announced that.
“We won’t make so many changes, keep it very easy, give the boys a clear structure. So that everyone knows very clearly what they have to do in their place,” said interim coach David Siebers on Tuesday (September 18, 2025). “If we bring this together, the team creates a flow directly. If we create this state, everyone in the stadium will see what fun in football means. That the boys are happy with my help here.”
Luthe: “Team plays under their possibilities”
The day before, the second division team had separated from sports director Dirk Dufner after the messed up of Hecking and somewhat surprisingly. Dufner had only started his job in April. “We no longer had the full conviction of creating the turnaround with Dieter Hecking and Dirk Dufner,” said CEO Andreas Luthe.
With just one win from the first five games, VfL is in the table cellar. “We are convinced that the team is playing under their possibilities,” said Luthe and confirmed that they wanted to find a new sports director as soon as possible, who works under Managing Director Ilja Kaenzig.
Hecking gratefully says goodbye to VfL and the fans
Hecking had said goodbye to VfL fans in the morning after the separation. “It was a highly emotional and intensive time on Castroper Straße, in which I was able to get to know VfL Bochum better and found what a great club he is,” said Hecking on the VfL website. “I wish the team the greatest possible success, the same applies to my successor. VfL will always have a special status for me, I will follow his career carefully. The fingers crossed for the game on Saturday.”
Then the Bochumers play at Hecking’s former club 1. FC Nürnberg. Until the international break in October, it goes against Fortuna Düsseldorf and the 1. FC Kaiserslautern. “I don’t strive for so many changes,” said Siebers. “I stand for high pressing and clear structures.”
