Lots of emotions and a late winning goal: HSV wins a thrilling game against Werder Bremen. The Bundesliga was noticeably missing the northern derby.

Fight, goals, passion, drama, emotions and two fan camps that gave their all: the 109th Bundesliga Northern Derby offered exactly what makes a good football game. It wrote those stories that only football creates. Neutral viewers also got their money’s worth. The Northern Derby is back on the big stage – a gift for the Bundesliga and proof of what football can move emotionally.

How much this duel means to Hamburg became clear long before kick-off: 5,000 fans welcomed theirs HSV at the Volksparkstadion. The team got out of the bus, ran the last few meters through a line of chants, flags and Bengalos – a first goosebumps moment, prepared as a surprise by the coaching team together with the fans.

But Werder also showed up early in the city with a lot of atmosphere. Already in the morning, countless Bremen fans gathered at the jetties. At midday, more than 2,000 Werder supporters marched from the Othmarschen S-Bahn station to the stadium, sang loudly and made it clear that they absolutely wanted to return as derby winners.

The action on the pitch was in no way inferior to the passionate surroundings. The game was rousing, intense and rich in special moments. Luka Vušković scored a spectacular backheel goal – standing with his back to the goal and with “Goal of the Year” potential. Yussuf Poulsen scored shortly after coming on to make it 3-2, his first goal ever for HSV.
