Two weeks ago, North Korea said it had “conquered” the coronavirus after it first reported an infection in May, but now it seems to be wrong again. North Korean state media reported four new “fever cases” resulting from the “malignant epidemic” on Thursday.
The North Korean authorities have announced a regional lockdown and are conducting more research into the origin of the infections. The country also introduced a lockdown in May after the number of “fever” infections rose rapidly. North Korea says it initially got through the corona pandemic unscathed thanks to strict border controls.
Earlier this month, it became clear that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un himself also became seriously ill during the corona wave that hit North Korea this year. About 5 million people in the country of 25 million people got “fever”.
As far as is known, there is no vaccination program in North Korea. The regime claims to have developed its own treatment.
