The World Championship leader actually crossed the finish line in second place. But discoveries after the race now have far-reaching consequences for Norris and also his teammate Oscar Piastri.
This is a dramatic turn in the Formula 1 title race on the home straight of the season: World Championship leader Lando Norris and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, second in the classification, were subsequently disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The FIA announced this on Sunday morning German time. The floor panels on both Formula 1 cars are thinner than the required 9 millimeters, as a measurement after the race showed.
After the Grand Prix, the technical delegate handed the matter over to the race stewards, who, after hearing both drivers, have now made the decision on Sunday night US time. Record world champion Lewis Hamilton was already disqualified in China this year for such a violation of the rules on his Ferrari.
The decision now has drastic effects on the title fight. Norris originally took second place in Las Vegas and massively increased his chances of celebrating his first title win in Qatar next Sunday. He initially led the World Cup standings with 408 points. Second was Piastri, 30 points behind, fourth in Las Vegas. Defending champion Max Verstappen follows in third place in the Red Bull. He won the third to last Grand Prix, but still had 42 points less than Norris.
Now the situation has changed fundamentally: Verstappen is now level on points with Piastri and only 24 points behind Norris. A maximum of 58 points are still up for grabs for a driver on the next two Grand Prix weekends. After Qatar with the sprint and race next weekend, the finale will follow in Abu Dhabi on December 7th.
