Nordic Combined: New “World Cup Highlight” in Germany

As expected, there will be numerous innovations in Nordic Combined in the upcoming World Cup winter. The international ski association FIS announced a new “World Cup highlight” for Germany.

In the fight for the future of the sport, there are already some innovations in Nordic Combined in the 2022/2023 World Cup season, which starts at the end of November.

As the FIS announced on Monday, at the annual autumn meeting of the responsible association committee on Friday in Zurich, not only the final World Cup calendars for men and women and the schedule for the second-class Continental Cup were approved.

New measuring method like in ski jumping

The new measurement method for determining the height of the athletes, which was announced in May, was successfully tested over the summer, the statement said. Nordic combined and ski jumping will use the same method in the future.

A new discipline will also be tested in the Continental Cup, the “Super Sprint”.

Similar to the mass start, there is first cross-country skiing on a maximum 800 meter long trail and only then on the ski jump.

Points are awarded for achievements. In several rounds, starting with quarterfinals and ending with finals, winners of the new format will be determined. The test event is scheduled for February 2023 in Rena, Norway.

“German Trophy” in Nordic Combined

The FIS announced a special “World Cup highlight” for Germany. Following an application by the DSV, a separate World Cup ranking is introduced for all German competitions, the “German Trophy”. The exact rules for this should be announced before the start of the season.

Two representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) also attended the meeting in Zurich.

According to the FIS, they have assured Nordic Combined “full support” on the way to the 2030 Winter Olympics.

Then there will also be a women’s competition, a basis for the continued existence of Nordic combined at the Olympics.
