THEto non-surgical blepharoplasty it is the dream of many women (but also men) who have the so-called “hooded eyes” or drooping eyelids. It is not only an aesthetic problem, but also a functional one. This characteristic, due to the natural conformation of the eye or to the ptosis (i.e. the descent) of the eyelid due to tissue failure in old age, can in fact also disturb vision. But not everyone wants to rely on surgery to solve the problem. A good alternative solution is non-surgical blepharoplasty, performed by an aesthetic or plastic doctor with a particular laser. We talked about it with Doctor Pietro CarlomagnoUltrasound Doctor, Nutritionist and Aesthetic Doctor at the Forma Sana Medical Center.

What is non-surgical blepharoplasty and what instrument is it performed with?

It does not require anesthesia, leaves no wounds or crusts, and is not painful. «It is the alternative way to surgery to effectively treat eyelid ptosis, therefore the skin laxity inherent to the eye contour, upper and lower eyelid. But also to correct dark circles, crow’s feet or, if we want to be kinder and use a more positive term, those “rays of sunshine” that form at the lateral level of the eye”, explains Dr. Pietro Carlomagno.

In which cases can it be performed?

«From 18 to any age, there is no limit. It also works very well on forehead wrinkles and on signs of the timesor, and is also used for resurfacing of the neck and décolleté, acne scarring thanks to its ablative and regenerating effect”, says the expert. Therefore also for skin with signs of keratosis, those dark and rough raised spots due to sun exposure and skin aging. Depending on the type of part to be treated, a different ablative tip is used, which delivers strokes that progressively lower the superficial layer of the skin.

In which cases it is not indicated

“AND a first visit is always essential very accurate knowledge of the patient, during which the case is studied and the most suitable treatment is proposed. Laser blepharoplasty cannot be performed on suspicious skin lesions, pregnancy, healing disorders, epilepsy, intake of vitamin A (isotretitoin), photosensitizing drugs (such as some antibiotics, antidepressants, NSAIDs, diuretics and others, ed)”.

How the treatment is carried out

«Non-surgical blepharoplasty It works by sublimationor for the passage of the tissue from a solid to a gaseous state. This is why you perceive a smell of burnt skin during the treatment. Each dot on the skin indicates that a small but necessary damage has been done to the skin which is read by the body as one stimulus to produce collagen and elastin. A lifting effect is obtained with improvement of the skin texture, which immediately appears smooth and well taut”, adds Dr. Carlomagno.

«According to the law, the patient must wear special glasses and cotton to protect his eyes from the light beam. The skin is cleansed of make-up and impurities and the treatment begins which lasts a few minutes. Post-treatment, the specific protocol must be followed which is written by the doctor and given to the patient to best promote the healing process of the treated tissue. No anesthesia is requiredyou hear of burning/numbness on the upper eyelid (not on other parts)», continues the doctor.

When is the best time to have non-surgical blepharoplasty?

The best period is autumn winter because the sun is not aggressive and there is no risk of irritation.

How does it look after treatment, are there any signs and/or pain left?

«You may have significant redness, possible slight swelling, but it does not require abstention from normal life, and no crusts form. Rapid recovery but it is essential to follow the recommendations indicated by the doctor after treatment”, explains the expert. Here’s what they are.

1. 30/40 days do not expose yourself to sun/solar lamps.

2. Avoid irritating/exfoliating agents (scrubs, peeling creams, retinol, glycolic).

3. No to chlorine in the pool.

4. Apply a soothing repairing cream, an antibiotic cream and sun protection 50 which will be indicated by the doctor who carried out the treatment.

How many sessions are necessary?

«On average there are two sessions. The first with the treatment and the second after 40 days for control and possible retouching and strengthening.”

How long does the effect of the treatment last, can it be repeated after a certain period?

«It depends on the reaction from person to person. Each body is subject to collagen loss with age and exposure to air and sunlight, but it reacts differently. Non-surgical blepharoplasty therefore has a variable effect depending on the person, it does not last 3 months but not even 10 years. After some time it can be repeated, always after a thorough visit to the aesthetic doctor and his evaluation. In general, the patients are very satisfied for having solved the problem of drooping eyelids in a very short time and without surgery with all that it entails, and without wounds to heal or scabs”, concludes Dr. Carlomagno.
